Hello everyone,
Today is a beautiful day. The sun is shining and there is coolness in the air. A great day for planting in Zone 8. We really have not had much winter so the ground can be worked easily. If you are not ready to plant something, anything, you can start by clearing the leaves and dead plants that are in your garden area. For me it's planting. I've spent time outdoors clearing and raking leaves and limbs earlier this winter.
You may ask, "What am I planting?" Well for starters, any early spring vegetable. These are radishes, lettuces, spinach, potatoes, turnips, rutabagas, onions, beets and peas. Not to mention the broccoli and collards that have survived the winter. This sounds like a good start for a salad. As the season continues to change there are other vegetables you can add to the garden. I like to start with my green vegetables and other onions then my tomatoes. But, I'll talk to you about those vegetables as the time approaches. You may also take the time to fertilize out ground with that compost you've been brewing. Adding organic amenities at this time is so beneficial. Plus the bugs aren't so active yet.
If you have a space for seedlings to grow inside your home until the ground warms up a bit more and the threat of frost to pass, then by all means, start your seed bed plants now. Doing a little at a time is so much easier then trying to do it all in one weekend. On the days that are not good for planting, according to the Farmers Almanac, make repairs, paint that old outdoor furniture, build that raised bed or fence, do something! It will look so beautiful when everything starts blooming. Stay posted and happy digging. Don't forget to turn the music on!
